How Many Solar Watts Do You Need for Camping?

Panels rarely deliver their rated wattage — plan on about 70% in good sun. With roughly four to five peak sun-hours a day, here is what a full day of sun puts back into a station:

Panel Energy per sunny day (~4.5 sun-hours) Good match for
100W ~315 Wh A 300 Wh station (phones, lights, a CPAP night)
200W ~630 Wh A 1 kWh station on a weekend trip
400W ~1,260 Wh A 1–2 kWh station running a 12V fridge every day

Never buy more panel than your station can accept — anything above its solar input ceiling is clipped. Our panel pairing table lists the ceiling for every station we track, and the setup guide covers wiring two panels together.

Four Checks Before You Pick a Camping Panel

1. Connector

Jackery uses 8mm-style DC plugs; EcoFlow and Anker use XT60 on the station side; many panels ship MC4. A mismatch is fixed with an adapter cable — budget for it and keep it in the kit.

2. Voltage window

A panel's open-circuit voltage must sit inside the station's solar input range. Two panels in series add their voltages — check before you daisy-chain.

3. Waterproofing

An IP68 rating on the panel face does not always cover the junction box and cables. Bring panels in during rain unless the whole kit is rated for it.

4. Weight you will actually carry

A 6 lb panel goes on a hike; a 17 lb panel stays at the car. Decide where the panel will live before you compare wattage.

Can You Get a Good Camping Solar Panel Under $200?

Sometimes. The brand-name folding panels we track mostly sell above $200 in the 100W class, and well above it at 200W, though sale events have historically pulled prices down. Lesser-known brands do sell 100W folding panels for less, but we could not confirm their specs from two independent sources, so we do not list them. Watch the live prices in the table above, and check our solar panel Black Friday deals in November.

For Basecamps and RVs: Heavier Folding Panels (20 lb+)

Too heavy to carry far, but more watts per panel — the right choice when the panel stays beside the vehicle. The 350–400W models fill most of a 2 kWh station's solar input on their own.

Panel Watts Weight Open-circuit voltage Price
EcoFlow 220W Portable Solar Panel 220W 20.9 lb 21.8V Check price at Amazon →
EcoFlow 400W Portable Solar Panel 400W 35.3 lb 48V $699.00
Bluetti PV350 350W Solar Panel 350W 30.6 lb 46.5V $599.00

Camping Solar Panel FAQ

What is the best solar panel for camping?

For tent camping and backpacking, the lightest panel that fits your station: in our database that is the Anker SOLIX PS100 Bifacial Solar Panel at 6.2 lb for 100W. For car camping with a 1 kWh station, a 200W folding panel from your station's brand is the better buy.

How many watts of solar do I need for camping?

About 100W keeps a 300 Wh station topped up for phones, lights and a CPAP night. A 1 kWh station on a weekend trip suits 200W. Running a 12V fridge every day from a 1 to 2 kWh station takes closer to 400W in good sun.

Will a 100W solar panel charge a power station?

Yes, slowly. In good sun a 100W panel delivers roughly 70W, or about 300 Wh across a sunny day, which refills a 300 Wh station but only tops up a 1 kWh unit.

Are folding solar panels waterproof?

Many carry IP65 to IP68 ratings, but those often apply to the panel face rather than the junction box and cables. Bring panels in during rain unless the whole kit is rated for it.

Can I use any brand of solar panel with my power station?

Usually, if the voltage and connector match. Check that the panel's open-circuit voltage sits inside the station's solar input range, and carry the right adapter cable for its connector.

Are bifacial solar panels worth it for camping?

They can add a little output when the back of the panel catches reflected light from sand, snow or a light-coloured surface. On grass or dirt the gain is small, so weight and fit matter more.
