Running a Freezer on a Power Station
A freezer is one of the best possible uses of a battery in an outage. It draws surprisingly little, it cycles rather than running continuously, and the alternative is losing hundreds of dollars of food. A freezer pulls a few hundred watts while the compressor runs, then draws almost nothing while it holds temperature. The duty cycle is what makes long runtimes possible.

A full, closed freezer holds temperature for a long time on its own. Every opening costs you hours — the cheapest energy saving available in an outage.

Runtime estimates assume the appliance is closed, is already at temperature, and the ambient room is not excessively hot. A freezer standing in a 90°F garage in summer will cycle more often than one in a cool basement — see the note on garage units below.
Freezers are one of the quieter successes of battery backup, and they pair naturally with refrigerator backup and furnace blower backup on the same battery — the three make a sensible core load list for a winter outage.
A Full Freezer Outperforms an Empty One
This is the most useful thing to understand about freezer backup, and it is counterintuitive: frozen food is thermal mass, and thermal mass is what keeps the box cold. A freezer packed tight holds its temperature far longer than an empty one, which means the compressor has to run less often to maintain it. Energy in the food is energy you are not drawing from the battery.
Before a known storm
Fill empty space with water bottles or ice packs and freeze them solid. You are converting empty air into stored cold, and they double as drinking water and cooler ice if the outage runs long.
During an outage
Group frozen items together and keep the lid shut. A chest freezer holds temperature noticeably better than an upright simply because cold air does not fall out when you open it.
Thawed food safety

The Garage Problem
Garage fridges and freezers are the worst-case version of this load, and it is worth knowing why before an outage rather than during one. Two effects work against you:
- •Ambient heat. An unconditioned garage in summer can sit 20°F or more above the house, so the compressor cycles far more often than the same appliance indoors.
- •Cold-weather units. Some garage-rated appliances are designed to run in low temperatures; a standard indoor fridge in a freezing garage can behave unpredictably. That is a manufacturer design question, not a battery one.
Practically: if you are backing up a garage unit in a hot climate, size up by roughly a third compared with the table above, and if the outage coincides with extreme heat, consider moving the most valuable items indoors instead of spending battery capacity fighting the ambient temperature.

How long will a power station run a freezer?
