A power station is one of the few emergency purchases people make and then mostly leave alone — sometimes for a year at a time. That is exactly the condition under which batteries quietly degrade, and it is also entirely preventable. These are the storage and maintenance habits that decide whether your unit is ready when you need it, and whether it lasts five years or fifteen.

The Storage Routine That Actually Works

If you do only five things for a station you keep for emergencies, do these:

Store it at about half charge, and unplug it

Around 50–60% is the sweet spot for long idle periods. Full is stressful for the cells and empty risks over-discharge, which can leave a battery unrecoverable. Disconnect everything, including solar panels, so nothing trickle-drains it.

Top it back up every three to six months

This is the habit that separates a battery that works in an emergency from one that does not. Put a recurring reminder in your calendar. A quarterly check takes two minutes and is the entire maintenance schedule for most owners.

Keep it cool, dry, and away from the floor

Sustained heat is the biggest environmental enemy of battery life — a garage that bakes in summer is a poor home for a station. Keep it out of direct sun, off a concrete floor that can wick moisture, and away from damp basements. A shelf in a conditioned utility room is close to ideal.

Never charge it frozen

Charging a lithium battery below freezing can damage it permanently, and good units will refuse to charge when too cold as a protective measure. Bring a cold station indoors and let it reach room temperature before plugging it in — a few hours is usually enough.

Actually use it once or twice a year

Run a real load through it — charge a laptop, run a cooler for an afternoon. You confirm the outlets, cables and inverter still work before you need them, and a battery that cycles occasionally is no worse off for it. Discovering a fault during an outage is the expensive way to find out.

Seasonal Care and Long Absences

Winter

Storage in a cold garage is generally fine, but expect reduced capacity while the unit is cold — that is normal behaviour, not damage, and it recovers at room temperature. The rule that matters is the charging one above. Bring it indoors if you plan to use it during a storm.

Summer

Heat is the more damaging season. Never leave a station in a parked car or a sun-baked shed for extended periods, and avoid charging immediately after it has been sitting in high heat. Let it cool first.

Before a long trip

Charge to roughly half, unplug everything including panels, and cover it against dust if it is in a workshop or garage. Half-charge plus a dust cover is a better leaving state than full and plugged in.

Everyday care

Keep vents and fans clear of dust, inspect cables for nicks, and avoid yanking connectors by the wire. Firmware updates through the manufacturer's app occasionally improve charging behaviour, so it is worth checking a couple of times a year on app-connected models.
