Can a Power Station Run a Furnace?
Yes — and it is the single highest-value thing a battery can do in a winter outage. A gas, propane, or oil furnace makes its own heat, but it cannot move that heat without electricity for the blower fan and control board. Power the blower and you get whole-home heat back for a few hundred watts, instead of heating one room with a 1,500W space heater that flattens the battery in an hour. Why the Furnace Is the Best Load in a Winter Outage
Resistive heating is the worst possible use of a battery. A single 1,500W space heater consumes 1,500 watt-hours every hour — more than a small power station holds — and it heats one room. A furnace blower is a completely different proposition: it draws a fraction of that, and it distributes heat your furnace is already producing through the whole house.

Real runtime moves with outdoor temperature, how well your house holds heat, and how your blower is wired. A colder night means longer cycles and a shorter runtime; mild weather means the opposite. Treat these as planning figures with a sensible margin, not guarantees.
How to Actually Connect the Station to Your Furnace
This is the part most guides skip, and it is the part that decides whether your plan works on the night you need it. You cannot simply plug a furnace into a battery unless the furnace is already cord-and-plug connected. Three realistic options:
Extension cord to the furnace's service outlet
Only if your furnace is already cord-and-plug connected to a standard receptacle (some installations are; check yours). In that case you can run a heavy-gauge cord from a station to that receptacle, with the circuit's breaker switched off first. If your furnace is hardwired into a junction box, this option does not exist — do not improvise it.
Transfer switch or generator inlet + interlock
The robust answer, installed by a licensed electrician. A transfer switch lets you feed selected circuits — furnace, fridge, a lighting circuit — from the station, and it makes backfeeding impossible by design. Dedicated circuit with an inlet box (portable-station friendly)
An electrician adds an inlet box outside and a small sub-panel or dedicated furnace circuit. You then connect the station with a proper cord when needed. More flexible than option 1, less invasive than a whole-home transfer switch, and it is the arrangement most portable-station owners end up with.
Two safety rules that are not negotiable
- • Never connect a portable power source to household wiring without a proper transfer device. Feeding a house circuit directly — "backfeeding" — can energise lines a utility crew believes are dead. Have an electrician install the connection.
- • Never run a fuel-burning generator indoors, in a garage, or in any attached space. Carbon monoxide from portable generators is a leading cause of consumer product CO deaths, and CO cannot be seen or smelled. If You Cannot Power the Furnace
Electric-resistance furnaces and heat pumps with strip heat draw far more than a portable battery can supply. If that is your setup, the plan changes to protecting people and pipes rather than heating the house:
- •Consolidate into one room and close it off. Body heat plus an electric blanket per person beats trying to heat the whole house.

Can a power station run a gas furnace?
Yes, in most cases. A gas furnace burns fuel for heat but needs electricity for its blower fan and control board — typically 300–600W while the blower runs. A station with at least 1,500W continuous output and 2,000 Wh of capacity will run a typical furnace through an overnight outage, assuming the furnace can be connected safely (see the connection options above).
How many watts does a furnace blower use?
Most residential furnace blowers draw somewhere in the 300–600W range while running, with higher-CFM and older PSC motors at the top of that range and modern variable-speed ECM motors often well below it. Because the blower cycles on and off, average draw over an hour is much lower than peak. Check the nameplate or manual on your own furnace for the exact figure.
Why does my inverter trip when the furnace starts?
Electric motors draw a startup inrush current several times their running wattage. A station rated at exactly the blower's running watts can still trip on startup. Look for surge (peak) output headroom — the units we recommend carry 3,900–8,000W surge, which is what absorbs that inrush.
How long will a 2,000 Wh power station run a furnace?
