Best Solar Generators for the Texas Power Grid
Texas is the only state that runs its own power grid. ERCOT operates largely isolated from the two national interconnections — which keeps Texas free of federal oversight, but also means that when the grid fails, meaningful help cannot be imported from neighboring states. February 2021's Winter Storm Uri proved what that isolation costs: more than 4.5 million customers lost power, some for four days. This guide covers what Texans specifically should look for in backup power, and our tested picks for every household type.

The practical takeaways for a Texas household: outages here arrive as rolling blackouts with short restore windows (fast recharging matters more than anywhere else), they come in both seasons (February freezes and August heat emergencies), and no cavalry is coming from out of state — your backup plan is genuinely yours. The one Texas advantage: abundant sun makes solar recharging more dependable here than almost anywhere in the country. Best Backup Power for Texas Homes, by Situation
All picks from hands-on 2026 awards testing — every one is battery-powered and safe to run indoors, which matters doubly in a state where Uri's aftermath included carbon monoxide deaths from gas generators run inside:
EcoFlow River 3 Plus — Apartment / Renter Pick
286 Wh · 1,200W output · LiFePO4
Current Price on Amazon: see current price on Amazon
For Texans in apartments where a gas generator was never an option: 286 Wh keeps phones, a router, lights, and a fan running through rolling outages, recharges in under an hour when power cycles back, and is safe to run in any room.
Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 — Best for ERCOT Rolling Outages
1,024 Wh · 2,000W output · LiFePO4
Current Price on Amazon: see current price on Amazon
Our Best for Beginners 2026 winner, and purpose-fit for how ERCOT sheds load: rolling blackouts with short restore windows. The ~49-minute full recharge means every window of grid power resets you to 100% — effectively multiplying its 1,024 Wh across a multi-day event.
Bluetti Elite 200 V2 — Fridge + Furnace-Fan Value
2,074 Wh · 2,600W output · LiFePO4
Current Price on Amazon: see current price on Amazon
Our Best Value 2026 winner: 2,074 Wh runs a refrigerator for roughly a day, or a gas furnace blower fan through a freezing night — the load that mattered most in February 2021 — at the best price per watt-hour in its class.
Anker SOLIX F3000 — Best Texas Home Backup
3,072 Wh · 3,600W output · LiFePO4
Current Price on Amazon: $1,499.99
Our Best for Emergencies 2026 winner: 3,072 Wh expandable to 24 kWh with 240V split-phase — that means well pumps, which took out water for rural Texans during Uri. Covers fridge, furnace fan, CPAP, and Wi-Fi simultaneously for days.
EcoFlow Delta Pro 3 — Whole-Home Texas System
4,096 Wh · 4,000W output · LiFePO4
Current Price on Amazon: $2,799.00
Our Best Overall 2026 winner: 4,096 Wh, 4,000W output, 240V, and Smart Home Panel transfer-switch integration for automatic switchover. With Texas sun, a solar array keeps it topped up through extended summer or winter events.
All five are on our Black Friday watchlist — buying before the first freeze at November pricing is the smart Texas play.
The Two-Season Texas Playbook
December – February
Freeze Events
- ✓Priority loads: gas furnace blower fan (300–600W), CPAP, fridge, phones. Full winter strategy in our winter storm guide.
- ✓Electric blankets (50–100W) over space heaters (1,500W) — fifteen times the runtime.
- ✓Charge to 100% when a freeze is forecast; store the unit indoors (LiFePO4 won't charge below 32°F).
June – September
Heat & Hurricane Events
- ✓Priority loads: fans, fridge, phones, Wi-Fi. Window AC needs 2 kWh-class units minimum — see our AC guide.
- ✓Gulf Coast households: pair this page with our hurricane prep guide.
- ✓Texas summer sun is a genuine asset — a 200–400W panel array keeps essentials running indefinitely. See our kits guide.
Texas Backup Power FAQ
Why can't Texas get power from other states during an outage?
ERCOT operates largely isolated from the Eastern and Western Interconnections, with only limited DC ties to neighboring grids. That isolation exempts Texas from most federal grid regulation — and during Uri it meant significant power couldn't be imported when Texas generation froze offline.
What size solar generator does a Texas home need?
For rolling-outage essentials (phones, router, lights, fan or CPAP): ~1 kWh with fast recharge. Add a refrigerator and furnace fan for freeze events: 2–3 kWh. Well pump or multi-day whole-home coverage: 3 kWh+ expandable with 240V support. Our sizing guide has the full worksheet.
Is a solar generator better than a gas generator for Texas outages?
For most households, yes: it runs safely indoors (a critical point — Uri's death toll included carbon monoxide poisonings from gas generators run in enclosed spaces), needs no fuel when gas stations lose power too, and recharges from the state's abundant sun. Gas still wins for very long full-house runtimes; our comparison guide covers the trade-offs.
Will solar panels work during a Texas winter storm?
Reduced but useful — even Uri's overcast days delivered some harvest, and the clear cold days that follow a front are excellent for solar. Plan panels as a supplement to fast AC recharging during grid windows, not a sole source. Details in our cloudy-day guide.
When should Texans buy backup power?
Before the first freeze warning — units sell out fast once a storm is named. The November sale window (Black Friday through Cyber Monday) lands right before freeze season and has historically offered the year's best pricing on exactly these models. See our deals hub.
