EcoFlow River 3 Review: A Small, Giftable Power Station, and When the River 3 Plus Is Worth More

Verdict

The EcoFlow River 3 is a 7.8 lb, 245Wh LiFePO4 power station with 300W of AC output, a one-hour wall recharge and a sub-20 ms UPS mode. It is a sensible budget gift for charging phones and laptops, running a router or powering a CPAP without the humidifier. It will not run a fridge, a microwave or anything over 300W. If you might need more, the River 3 Plus doubles the output and solar input and can take an extra battery.

Reading the Amazon title: the listing headline says “245Wh 550W.” EcoFlow’s spec sheet rates the AC inverter at 300W continuous (600W X-Boost), so plan around 300W for anything you plug into the AC outlets. EcoFlow also sells a “River 3 UPS” variant in some regions with a faster switchover; the US unit we track is quoted at under 20 ms. We leave out warranty length because we could not confirm it in a second source. Check the listing.

How Long Will the EcoFlow River 3 Run? Real-World Runtimes

Estimates use 245Wh × 0.85, or about 208Wh usable after inverter losses, divided by the load. For comparison, The Solar Lab measured about 83% efficiency at a 273W load, close to this assumption. USB charging skips the inverter, so phone and laptop numbers can run a little higher.

Load Typical draw Est. runtime
Smartphone~12Wh per charge~17 full charges
Wi-Fi router + modem~20W~10.4 hrs
LED holiday string lights~30W~6.9 hrs
CPAP (no humidifier)~40W~5.2 hrs
Mini fridge (average while cycling)~50W~4.2 hrs
Laptop~60W~3.5 hrs
50-inch TV~100W~2.1 hrs
Full-size refrigerator~150W average, high start-up surgeNot recommended: start-up can exceed 300W
Microwave / coffee maker~1,000W+Will not run

The pattern: a router runs overnight, a CPAP gets most of one night, and a laptop gets a few full work sessions. For the full appliance list, see what can a solar generator run; for CPAP sizing, see can a solar generator run a CPAP.

Is the EcoFlow River 3 a Good Gift?

For the right person, yes. It is one of the lowest-cost ways to give a real AC power station from a major brand, and it is small enough to wrap. It suits:

  • Campers and tailgaters who charge phones, lights, a speaker and a camera (see best solar generators for camping)
  • Remote workers who want the router and laptop to ride through short outages (see power station vs UPS)
  • CPAP users who want one night of backup by the bed
  • Anyone in a storm-prone area building a basic outage kit

It is the wrong gift for someone who expects to keep a fridge cold during an outage. That person needs a 1kWh-class station. Gift tip: add a panel only if they will actually use solar. EcoFlow’s own 110W panel matches the River 3’s input exactly, but it is a separate purchase that can approach the cost of the station itself.

vs Bluetti Elite 30 V2: slightly more capacity and twice the continuous output (600W), with a 10 ms UPS. It is the better pick for 300–600W loads; the River 3 is about 1.7 lb lighter.

vs Jackery Explorer 300: similar capacity and the same 300W output. The River 3 adds a published UPS mode and a bit more solar input (110W vs 100W); the Jackery is slightly lighter.

vs Anker SOLIX C300 DC: the Anker has no AC outlet. If everything the recipient owns charges over USB-C or a car socket, it is lighter. If they need to plug in a CPAP brick or a lamp, get the River 3 — or the AC version of the Anker SOLIX C300, which holds 288 Wh.

vs EcoFlow River 2 Pro: the previous-generation River is a different size class, with 768Wh and 800W across four AC outlets, but it weighs about 17 lb. If the gift is for car camping or short outages rather than a backpack or desk, see our EcoFlow River 2 Pro review.

vs Bluetti Elite 30 Mini: the same 300W class with a built-in USB-C cable; see our Elite 30 Mini review.

EcoFlow River 3 Pros & Cons

What We Like

  • • 7.8 lb: easy to carry with one hand
  • • About 1-hour wall recharge
  • • LiFePO4 rated 3,000 cycles, so it suits years of regular use
  • • 100W USB-C charges most laptops without the AC brick

EcoFlow River 3 FAQ

Is the EcoFlow River 3 worth it?

Yes, if you want a small, light AC power station for phones, laptops, a router, camera batteries or a CPAP without the humidifier. It holds 245Wh of LiFePO4 rated for 3,000 cycles, recharges from the wall in about an hour and weighs 7.8 lb. It is not worth it if you need to run a fridge, a microwave, a coffee maker or anything that draws more than 300W.

EcoFlow River 3 vs River 3 Plus: which should I buy?

Buy the River 3 Plus if you might ever run something between 300W and 600W, want faster solar charging or want to add a battery later. It has 286Wh against 245Wh, twice the continuous output (600W vs 300W), twice the solar input (220W vs 110W), a faster UPS switchover (under 10 ms vs under 20 ms) and expansion to 858Wh. Buy the River 3 if it is mainly for phones, laptops and lights, or if the lower weight (7.8 lb vs 10.4 lb) matters.

How long will the EcoFlow River 3 run a CPAP?

About 5.2 hours for a CPAP drawing around 40W with the heated humidifier off. That covers most of one night. Using the heated humidifier raises the draw sharply, so plan on a DC adapter, a larger station or the River 3 Plus with an extra battery for multi-night use.

Can the EcoFlow River 3 run a refrigerator?

Not reliably. A full-size refrigerator's compressor start-up can exceed the River 3's 300W limit. The Solar Lab reported that a full-size fridge caused an immediate shutdown in its test. A small 12V or efficient mini fridge averaging about 50W can run for roughly 4.2 hours. For fridge backup, step up to a 1kWh-class station.

What is X-Boost on the EcoFlow River 3?

X-Boost lets the River 3 run resistive heating devices rated up to 600W by lowering the voltage, so they run at reduced power. It does not raise the 300W continuous limit for motors or compressors. The Solar Lab found that X-Boost underpowers demanding loads such as a toaster.

Can you take the EcoFlow River 3 on a plane?

No. At 245Wh it is well above the 160Wh limit the FAA sets for lithium batteries in carry-on or checked bags. Lithium-ion batteries over 160Wh are forbidden on passenger aircraft.

Is the EcoFlow River 3 expandable?

No. The River 3 cannot take an extra battery. If you want to start small and add capacity later, the River 3 Plus accepts EcoFlow's Extra Battery 300 or 600 for up to 858Wh.

How long does the EcoFlow River 3 take to charge?

About one hour from a wall outlet at 320W, per EcoFlow. The Solar Lab reported 58 minutes with a warm unit and about 1 hour 20 minutes when cold. With 110W of solar, EcoFlow quotes as little as 2.6 hours; in real sun, expect three hours or more.
